Brooklyn Stitchery Open House

  • Brooklyn Stitchery

Tuesday, January 17th

Why are we talking about bicycles at Brooklyn Stitchery's open house? It's a new year with new beginnings. We know the benefits of bike riding are plentiful that's why we ride and why we want to keep riding. In our effort to succeed we partnered with Brooklyn Stitchery because cycling products for women are hard to find, often discontinued, or sold out. In other words we need options! Meet the studio's teachers, see what projects you can make, learn about upcoming sewing workshops, and more.

Want to know more about Brooklyn Stitchery? Drop by and learn to sew! Brooklyn Stitchery is the studio space of Catherine Petrosino–but it’s not just a studio. It’s a place where you or your child can learn new sewing skills or enhance and develop existing technique. It’s a unique place where you can see the inner workings of a studio while taking a class.

Catherine teaches her students industry techniques as well as how to alter commercial patterns for a custom fit. Making a garment is an intuitive process and understanding construction and technique, an important aspect. Foundation is the basis of everything that comes out of Brooklyn Stitchery–from the clothing designed and created in the studio to the way classes are taught.

Brooklyn Stitchery offers you or your child a unique opportunity to take classes in a working studio. Spacious and well equipped, the studio includes a variety of sewing machines, Catherine’s large collection of fabrics and sewing notions, and everything you need to learn and create.

Brooklyn Stitchery also hosts events and creative workshops. We recently became an art gallery for the Stand Project and host workshops for organizations. We work with fashion industry professors to give fashion design workshops as well as inviting local designers and artisans to the studio to show their work and help you connect to your creativity.

Baby on Board: Bicycle Riding While Pregnant

On October 25th Get Women Cycling member and expectant mother Jessica Rich will share her story "33 Weeks and Still Going Strong" with us. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) -- the nation’s largest organization of ob-gyns -- calls for women with uncomplicated pregnancies to get 30 minutes or more of moderate exercise daily on most days, yet reports reveal that only a small percentage of pregnant women meet recommended exercise goals.

Talking points will cover:

  • Safety
  • Listening to our bodies as they change
  • Protecting out bodies: gear and equipment
  • Having fun!
