About Loca-MŌ

Loca-MŌ, a project of Get Women Cycling, is a NYC-based initiative providing innovative safety education and training for all types of urban road users—including cyclists, e-scooter riders, light vehicle operators, and drivers. Our programs combine advocacy, real-time advice, and community engagement to create safer, more equitable streets for everyone.

New & Ongoing Initiatives

  • ask MŌ: Community Transportation Advice Service: Modeled after Dear Abby and Gridlock Sam, this new public tool helps New Yorkers make sense of their streets with access to clear and accurate answers to common questions. Have a street traffic question? ask MŌ!

  • Commuter Awareness Outreach (10 years running!): We supplement NYS DMV educational courses with critical updates on changing streetscapes, operator behavior patterns, vehicle limitations, and infrastructure evolution.

  • Point & Insurance Reduction Courses: As a certified course provider, we deliver state-approved classes with a focus on street safety, equity, and real-world urban conditions.

  • 360° Collaborative Initiatives: We co-design equitable safety solutions alongside city agencies, mobility companies, delivery worker groups, and local organizations to protect essential workers and promote mobility justice.

  • Defensive Bike Riding & Operator Training Courses: adapted from defensive driving best practices to reduce crashes and road conflict between modes, with a focus on mutual awareness and shared responsibility.

  • Community Engagement: In partnership with NYC DOT, we’re actively engaging delivery workers and commuters to build safer travel behaviors along this vital corridor.

  • Annual Street Safety March: Held each November in Sunset Park on World Day of Remembrance, our march honors lives lost to traffic violence and demands urgent investment in safer street education and infrastructure citywide.

Why it matters

Loca-’s work is rooted in the belief that education saves lives—and that underserved commuters deserve access to the same safety knowledge as anyone else. Our programs empower communities, reduce risk, and foster a more respectful urban mobility culture.
